Phosphate emerges as critical strategic commodity
Phosphate has emerged as a critical strategic commodity, impacting global food security and geopolitical stability. While attention often focuses on minerals for technology and defense, phosphate is essential for global fertilizer production.
Supply chain vulnerabilities have been highlighted by maritime choke points like the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions in the Middle East, which accounts for nearly 30 per cent of global fertilizer exports. Additionally, rising sulphur prices have increased processing costs globally.
A major structural shift is occurring due to China, which produces approximately 40 per cent of the world's phosphate, as the government has directed major producers to suspend exports. This has created opportunities for other nations to supply the market at a premium. Morocco holds the largest reserves, containing over 68 per cent of the global total at 50 billion metric tonnes. In the United States, companies such as Mosaic and Nutrien are expanding operations to secure alternative supplies for the Americas market.
