ArtCraft launches open-source suite of seven Adobe alternatives
Software engineer Brandon Thomas has launched ArtCraft, an open-source suite of seven creative tools designed to serve as free alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud. Developed using the Rust programming language and assisted by Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 AI model, the project aims to provide a “subscription-free” ecosystem for creators.
The suite includes PhotoCraft (Photoshop), VectorCraft (Illustrator), FilmCraft (Premiere Pro), LightCraft (Lightroom), PdfCraft (Acrobat), EffectCraft (After Effects), and DesignCraft (InDesign). The tools are designed to be cross-platform, supporting Windows, macOS, and Linux, with some functionality available via web browsers.
While the core software is free and open-source, ArtCraft offers paid subscription tiers specifically for generative AI credits used in image and video generation. Although the tools aim to replicate familiar workflows and interfaces to reduce the learning curve, current testing indicates limitations in complex professional workflows and file format compatibility, such as proprietary Adobe .psd or .ai files.
