Photography exhibitions in Brazil highlight Black identity and representation

Multiple photography exhibitions in Brazil are highlighting themes of Black identity, representation, and family life.

In São Gonçalo, the “Raízes da Beleza” exhibition by photographer Joyce Caetano is hosted at the Casa das Artes. The project explores dimensions of body, image, fashion, and identity through photographs combined with materials such as wood, clay, straw, and fabric. The exhibition aims to celebrate the diverse histories and experiences of Black women.

Additionally, the “Maternidade Negra à Luz” exhibition, created by poet and psychologist Lubi Prates, is on display at the Complexo Cultural Oswald de Andrade. Featuring over 60 photographs taken in Portugal, the collection documents the daily lives of eight Black mothers. The project seeks to challenge historical stereotypes and provide new visual narratives regarding Black motherhood and family connections.
