Photography exhibitions in Italy feature Richard Avedon and Lee Miller

Two major photography exhibitions are opening in Italy, showcasing the works of iconic 20th-century photographers.

At the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the exhibition ‘The American West, 1979-1984’ by Richard Avedon will run from October 9 to January 31. The collection features 110 photographs captured during a five-year journey across 21 US states. Moving away from glamorous stereotypes, Avedon’s work focuses on the raw reality of people working in mines, livestock markets, and truck stops, utilizing natural lighting and neutral backgrounds to capture the human essence.

In Forlì, the San Domenico museum is hosting a retrospective of Lee Miller’s work, running until January 10. Curated by Walter Guadagnini, the exhibition displays 160 photographs from the Lee Miller Archives, including previously unpublished images. The collection explores the duality of Miller’s career, ranging from surrealist art and fashion photography to her documentation of the horrors of extermination camps during the war.
