Photography exhibitions opening in Rio de Janeiro

Two photography exhibitions are opening in Rio de Janeiro, exploring themes of memory, materiality, and the abstraction of reality.

Luciana Rique will present ‘Entre Órbitas’ at Casa Proeza on September 17 during ArtRio. Curated by Eder Chiodetto, the exhibition features approximately 35 works that blend photography with materials such as iron, gold, charcoal, and Korean handmade paper. The collection aims to obscure the appearance of the world rather than simply revealing it, creating a space where forms appear to float.

Spanish photographer Beatriz Ruibal is presenting ‘Inventário’ at the Instituto Cervantes in Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition, which follows tours in Europe, uses photography to examine objects as witnesses to history, specifically relating to the Spanish Civil War. By photographing everyday items in large scale, Ruibal explores how objects serve as extensions of their former owners and fragments of memory.
