Photojournalist Fumihiro Ishikawa dies at 88

Renowned photojournalist Fumihiro Ishikawa passed away on August 23 at the age of 88 due to malignant lymphoma in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. Ishikawa was celebrated as a legendary figure in war photography, known for his ability to survive numerous life-threatening situations while documenting the realities of conflict.

His career began in his 20s when his photograph of a wounded U.S. Army major was distributed globally via the AP通信. He was a prominent witness to the Vietnam War, documenting the conflict and the role of Okinawa as a rear base. In 1979, he traveled to Cambodia to report on the atrocities following the collapse of the Pol Pot regime. Even after suffering a myocardial infarction at age 68, he continued his work, including a 3,500-kilometer journey across Japan.

Director Atsunori Kawamura, who spent seven years filming a documentary titled ‘The Bohemian of the Battlefield: Photographer Fumihiro Ishikawa’, paid tribute to him, describing him as a ‘legendary journalist who recorded the truth of war with all his energy.’ The documentary, scheduled for release on November 28, explores Ishikawa's life and his mission as a witness to history.
