European energy costs rise amid gas price volatility
Energy costs are rising across several European regions due to geopolitical tensions and market fluctuations. In France, the Commission de régulation de l’énergie (CRE) reports that the gas reference price is expected to increase by 6.6 percent on November 1. This follows significant rises in September and October, bringing the cumulative increase since January 2026 to over 42 percent. Households using gas for central heating are projected to see an 8.3 percent rise in costs.
In Austria, Wien Energie is attempting to mitigate rising costs by offering a 30 percent discount on the working price for district heating in the 2026/27 period. However, due to increased gas prices, total costs for a model apartment are still expected to rise by approximately six percent. Additionally, the Austrian electricity market remains sensitive to gas price volatility.
In Germany, gas network fees are projected to increase in 2027, with significant variations between different operators. While some forecasts suggest a slight decrease in general gas costs for 2026, Verivox warns of potential price spikes of up to 20 percent. Meanwhile, the German government plans to maintain the CO2 price for natural gas between 55 and 65 euros per tonne through 2027.
