Phu Bai International Airport to undergo major expansion through 2030

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has completed the detailed planning dossier for Phu Bai International Airport for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision extending to 2050. Developed by the Transport Engineering Design Consultants Corporation (TEDI), the project aims to align with the national airport network, boost the socio-economic development of Hue, and strengthen regional security and defense.

Located in the Phu Bai and Huong Thuy wards of Hue, the airport serves both civilian and military purposes. The total planned land area exceeds 526 hectares. By 2030, the airport is targeted to reach ICAO 4E standards and military Grade I status, with a capacity to handle 4 million passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo annually. Upgrades include extending the runway to 3,600 x 45 meters, expanding aircraft parking to at least 11 positions, and repurposing Terminal T1 for general aviation while planning a new cargo terminal.

Looking toward 2050, the long-term vision includes the addition of a parallel runway and a third terminal (T3).
