Phu Quoc International Airport opens second runway
Phu Quoc International Airport officially commenced operations of its second runway on October 29. The new runway, designated 10L/28R, is 3,300 meters long and 45 meters wide, meeting ICAO Code E standards. This infrastructure allows the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft, including the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
The first commercial flight to land on the new strip was Sun PhuQuoc Airways flight SPQ1955, an Airbus A321neo, arriving at 7:04 AM local time. Following this inaugural landing, the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) successfully managed 38 flights during the first morning of operation, including wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 787.
The project was completed in eight months and features advanced technical systems, including ILS/DME landing aids and CAT II lighting to support operations in limited visibility. The expansion is part of a broader development plan to enhance aviation capacity in Phu Quoc, supporting tourism, economic growth, and preparations for the 2027 APEC Summit.
