Phu Quoc proposed as special economic zone in Vietnam

The An Giang Provincial People's Council has approved a proposal to recognize Phu Quoc as a special economic zone. The plan covers the entire administrative boundary of Phu Quoc, excluding Tho Chau, with a natural area of 575.29 square kilometers. The initiative aims to attract approximately 195 trillion VND in total social investment between 2026 and 2030.

Phu Quoc reportedly meets three key criteria for special zone status: strategic location linked to national defense and security, the presence of an international airport or a Class I seaport, and a relatively independent, controllable space with sufficient population and area. The designation is expected to improve management efficiency, attract investment, and boost tourism and services.

Local authorities are also preparing for APEC 2027, emphasizing the need to resolve infrastructure bottlenecks, manage urban growth, and protect the environment. Key focus areas include land use rights, site clearance, waste management, and transitioning to green transport to protect marine and forest ecosystems.
