Phu Tho authorities respond to recurring Nui Bong landfill fire
Authorities in Phu Tho province have ordered urgent measures to completely extinguish a recurring fire at the Nui Bong temporary landfill in Vinh Phuc Ward. While firefighters managed to control the blaze on the morning of October 13, the fire reignited shortly after due to smoldering embers deep within the waste layers. The affected area is estimated to be between 500 and 600 square meters.
To combat the fire, local officials are utilizing excavators to turn over layers of waste, exposing hidden hotspots to facilitate complete suppression. The provincial government has directed the police, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and local ward authorities to coordinate efforts to prevent further spread, ensure public safety, and minimize environmental pollution.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is tasked with assessing the environmental impact and proposing long-term solutions for the site by October 20. This incident follows long-standing community concerns regarding the landfill, which has faced issues with odor, pests, and waste overflow since 2019.
