Phuc Khanh hosts 2026 Green Rice Festival in Lao Cai
The Phuc Khanh commune in Lao Cai province held the 2026 Green Rice Festival, also known as “Tet Khau Mau” by the Tay people. The event, held at the Gia Ha village communal house, aims to preserve the traditional craft of making green rice (com) and promote local specialties to boost tourism and community income.
The festival included the ritual of “carrying the soul of the mother rice” from the fields to the communal house, a ceremony expressing gratitude and hopes for a bountiful harvest. Following the traditional rituals, a green rice making competition was held, showcasing the meticulous process of harvesting, roasting, and pounding glutinous rice to maintain its texture and flavor.
This marks the first time the festival has been organized at the commune level following recent administrative restructuring. The event serves to connect local residents, introduce cultural identity to tourists, and encourage younger generations to learn traditional agricultural crafts.
