Phuket authorities review Patong Jewish New Year event over safety concerns

Phuket authorities are reviewing the feasibility of a Rosh Hashanah celebration scheduled for September 11, 2026, in Patong following formal opposition from a local activist group. The Protect Phuket Land Group, led by Saichon Nuchet, submitted a petition to the provincial governor requesting the cancellation of the event organized by Chabad Patong.

The group expressed concerns that the gathering, which could involve 1,000 to 2,000 participants, might become a target for third parties seeking to cause unrest. They argued that heightened international tensions surrounding Israel could lead to protests or violence, potentially damaging Phuket’s reputation as a safe tourism destination.

Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom has assigned deputy governors to lead discussions with security agencies, police, and stakeholders to assess risks. Officials stated they are considering the law, the current security situation, and public sentiment. Organizers have been asked to review these concerns and notify the province of their intended actions by September 9 to allow for adequate security planning.
