Phuket beach visitor hospitalized after Portuguese man o’ war sting

A foreign tourist was hospitalized after suffering a severe allergic reaction following a sting by a Portuguese man o’ war at Naithon Beach in Phuket, Thailand. Lifeguards provided immediate first aid before the individual was transported to a hospital.

Medical experts from San Paolo Hua Hin Hospital have issued safety guidelines for those encountering venomous marine life. They advise that any remaining tentacles should be removed using an object like a card, stick, or paper to avoid direct skin contact. It is critical not to rub, massage, or apply medication to the affected area, as pressure can cause remaining venom-containing structures to release more toxins.

Furthermore, the hospital recommends rinsing the area with seawater rather than fresh water, as fresh water may stimulate further venom discharge. Visitors are encouraged to alert lifeguards immediately upon spotting venomous animals and to consider avoiding the sea during the rainy season when jellyfish presence increases.
