Physical activity aids mental health in Brazil
Physical activity serves as a significant tool for managing mental health, specifically in controlling stress and anxiety. According to 2024 data from the Covitel survey, approximately 56 million Brazilians—about 26.8% of the population—suffer from some degree of anxiety. This figure aligns with World Health Organization (WHO) observations regarding Brazil's high incidence of anxiety disorders.
Certain exercises are particularly effective due to factors like repetitive movement, breath control, and pleasant environments. Recommended activities include outdoor walking, light running, cycling, swimming, dancing, weight training, yoga, and Pilates. These exercises trigger the release of neurotransmitters such as endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, which promote well-being.
Medical specialist Dr. Gustavo Locatelli notes that regular exercise can improve a person's ability to handle discomfort, enhance their sense of control, and reduce rumination. To maintain health, the WHO recommends that adults engage in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity.
