Physical activity and retro walking benefits for brain health

Research indicates that physical movement is essential for maintaining cognitive health, memory, and emotional well-being. While occasional inactivity is not harmful, long-term sedentary habits are linked to increased risks of chronic disease and cognitive decline, including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The World Health Organization recommends limiting sitting time and replacing it with physical activity to support brain function and circulation.

One specific method gaining attention from scientists and physiotherapists is retro walking, or walking backward. Unlike standard walking where the heel strikes first, walking backward involves leading with the front of the foot. This shift in biomechanics activates different muscle groups, improves balance and flexibility, and requires higher levels of concentration as the brain must more intensely process visual and proprioceptive information to maintain stability.
