Physical activity and yoga improve mental health during menopause

Recent scientific research highlights the significant impact of physical activity on mental health during menopause. A meta-analysis published in the journal Menopause, involving 1,003 women aged 40 to 65, found that aerobic exercises such as walking, dancing, or aerobics significantly reduced depressive symptoms and improved mood and quality of life.

Mind-body practices, including yoga, Pilates, and Tai-Chi, were also shown to reduce stress and improve psychological well-being. Specifically, the proportion of women reporting no stress increased by approximately 35 percent through yoga practice. Experts recommend combining 30 minutes of brisk walking or dancing two to three times a week with stretching and yoga exercises.

While exercise is a powerful tool for managing symptoms like sleep disturbances, depressive moods, and brain fog, medical professionals emphasize that physical activity is not a replacement for clinical treatment in cases of severe depression. Additionally, social scientists note that 85 percent of women surveyed expressed a desire for greater societal recognition of this life stage.
