Physical activity initiatives promote active mobility and healthy aging

Efforts to increase physical activity are being highlighted through various initiatives, addressing the World Health Organization's finding that approximately 1.8 billion adults globally do not meet recommended activity levels.

In observance of World Car Free Day, experts suggest incorporating active mobility into daily commutes. Recommendations include walking for short distances, cycling, or disembarking from public transport several blocks early to increase movement. Technology, such as wearable devices, can assist in tracking distance and effort to help users gradually increase their activity.

Additionally, the University of Talca hosted an international workshop focused on Nordic walking to promote healthy aging. Experts noted that using walking poles activates over 90% of the body's musculature compared to conventional walking. The activity is emphasized as a tool for improving quality of life and social connection, particularly for older adults seeking to maintain autonomy and independence.
