Physical activity is essential for healthy ageing

Regular physical activity is a critical component of healthy ageing, helping individuals maintain the strength, confidence, and mobility required for daily tasks. Incorporating movement into a daily routine, such as walking, can improve physical health by lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol, and reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

Beyond physical fitness, regular activity supports mental well-being by aiding memory, reducing the risk of depression and anxiety, and improving sleep quality. Research also suggests a link between physical activity and a lower risk of several cancers, including breast, colon, bladder, and kidney cancers.

To combat the natural decline in muscle mass, strength exercises using weights, resistance bands, or body weight are recommended. Additionally, balance-focused activities like Tai Chi can improve stability. For those starting from a sedentary lifestyle, gradual increases in activity, such as short walks, are more effective and realistic than sudden intense exercise.
