Physical activity linked to improved brain health and dementia prevention

Recent research highlights the critical link between physical activity and cognitive health. A study conducted by researchers at Concordia University in Canada examined how moderate exercise affects brain performance following sleep deprivation. The study found that while lack of sleep significantly impairs memory and recall, engaging in brief periods of moderate physical activity, such as cycling, can help mitigate these negative effects.

Furthermore, large-scale studies involving populations in Norway suggest that cardiorespiratory fitness plays a vital role in preventing dementia. Data indicates that individuals with higher fitness levels or those who improve their fitness over time tend to maintain greater brain volume in areas related to cognitive health. Research involving over 30,000 participants showed that increasing cardiorespiratory fitness is statistically associated with a reduced risk of developing dementia.
