Physical activity linked to improved cancer survival rates

A new Taiwanese meta-analysis indicates that structured physical activity for cancer patients is linked to improved survival rates and a reduced risk of recurrence. The study suggests that exercise provides benefits beyond mere supportive care, potentially impacting therapeutic outcomes.

Research findings show that structured physical activity can reduce the risk of all-cause mortality by 23% among cancer survivors. Sub-group analyses highlighted survival benefits specifically from aerobic training and combined aerobic and resistance training, whereas resistance training alone did not show a significant effect.

Celena Scheede-Bergdahl, a professor at McGill University, noted a paradigm shift over the last 15 years, emphasizing that patients must maintain physical condition to prepare for surgery, treatment, or rehabilitation to avoid health complications.
