Physical activity linked to reduced depression and anxiety symptoms

A large review of clinical trials indicates that various forms of physical activity, including walking, cycling, strength training, and yoga, can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. The findings suggest that exercise should hold a significant place in mental health care, though researchers note it is not a universal replacement for all other treatments.

For depression, aerobic activities that increase heart rate and breathing appeared particularly effective. In contrast, some studies showed that shorter programs and lower-intensity activities provided useful results for anxiety. The review also noted that supervised or group activities may offer stronger benefits due to the added elements of structure and social connection.

Beyond mental health, regular physical activity such as walking supports cardiovascular health, aids weight management, and helps prevent chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes. Experts suggest that even moderate, consistent movement can improve sleep quality, energy levels, and overall daily functioning.
