Physical activity linked to reduced risks of heart disease and Parkinson's
Recent scientific studies highlight the significant health benefits of various forms of physical activity for cardiovascular and neurological health.
A meta-analysis by researchers from the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, involving data from 480,000 participants, found that regular stair climbing can reduce the risk of death from heart disease by 39% and the risk of death from any cause by 24%. The study, published in the ‘American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs’, suggests that incorporating stairs into daily routines is an accessible way to improve heart health.
Research from Macao Polytechnic University, published in the ‘British Journal of Sports Medicine’, indicates that while the standard recommendation of 150 minutes of weekly activity provides some protection, significantly higher benefits are seen with 9 to 10 hours of weekly exercise. At this higher level, the risk of cardiovascular disease drops by over 30%.
Additionally, a review of 129 studies published in ‘Neuroprotection’ suggests that regular exercise may help protect the brain in patients with Parkinson's disease. During physical exertion, muscles release chemicals called myokines that can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in nerve cells, potentially supporting brain plasticity and helping cells manage damage.
