Physical activity promotes bone remodeling and functional autonomy

Physical activity serves as a primary strategy for maintaining bone health and resistance throughout life. Regular exercise, particularly weight-bearing activities such as walking, running, and weight training, stimulates mechanical signals that trigger bone remodeling. This physiological process involves osteoclasts removing old bone tissue and osteoblasts forming new tissue, a balance that is optimized through mechanical loading.

For individuals over the age of 50, combining different types of exercise is essential for preserving strength, mobility, balance, and autonomy. As the population ages, incorporating muscle-strengthening activities—recommended by the World Health Organization at least twice a week—is vital to combat the natural loss of muscle mass and functional capacity. Experts suggest starting with medical evaluations to tailor programs to individual physical limitations and mobility needs.
