Physical activity supports brain waste clearance and cognitive health

A research review led by Dr. James Broatch of Victoria University suggests that physical activity plays a critical role in protecting the brain from age-related decline, including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The study examines how exercise supports the glymphatic system, a biological mechanism that clears metabolic waste products from the brain during sleep. Findings indicate that regular physical activity can enhance this cleansing process by lowering blood pressure, reducing vascular stiffness, improving neuronal activity, and limiting brain inflammation. Additionally, exercise may improve sleep quality by increasing deep sleep and slow-wave activity, both of which are essential for effective brain detoxification.
