Physical assessments identified as key for elderly health and risk management

New research and medical recommendations are highlighting the importance of physical assessments to improve health outcomes for older adults. A study led by Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili and the Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca indicates that the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)—a test measuring balance, gait speed, and lower limb strength—can identify cancer patients at a significantly higher risk of mortality within one year. Patients identified as frail through this 10-minute test faced a 2.53 times higher risk of death, suggesting that treatment decisions should consider functional status rather than just chronological age.

In Mexico, the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) is emphasizing preventive measures to reduce injuries in the elderly. Specialists recommend initial physical assessments to establish rehabilitation exercises aimed at recovering strength and balance. This initiative seeks to combat sarcopenia and osteoporosis, which contribute to falls. Statistics show that approximately 60 percent of adults aged 60 to 65 experience a fall annually, often resulting in hip fractures or head trauma, with 80 percent of these incidents occurring within the home.
