Physical changes and nutritional needs during the aging process

As individuals age, the body undergoes various physiological changes that affect metabolism, vision, and physical strength. Starting around age 40, many experience presbyopia, where the lens of the eye hardens, making it difficult to focus on close objects like small text.

Physical changes in the 40s and beyond include a gradual decline in muscle mass and strength, reduced elasticity in arterial walls which can lead to increased blood pressure, and a potential decrease in kidney filtration functions.

For those over 60, managing weight becomes more complex due to slower metabolism and muscle loss. Rather than fasting, experts recommend focusing on nutrient-dense foods to maintain muscle while reducing fat. Key food groups include high-quality proteins (fish, eggs, tofu), soluble fiber (oats, apples, chia seeds), complex carbohydrates (brown rice, quinoa), and healthy fats (avocado, olive oil). Individuals with underlying conditions such as diabetes or hypertension should consult medical professionals before making significant dietary changes.
