Physical fitness markers like grip strength and balance predict longevity
Research indicates that simple physical assessments, such as grip strength and balance tests, serve as significant markers for overall health and mortality risk in aging populations.
A systematic review published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that higher grip strength is associated with lower subsequent mortality, acting as a useful indicator of muscular strength and physical resilience.
In a study of over 13,000 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older in Taiwan, researchers identified balance and agility as key predictors of longevity. Participants who excelled in an “8-foot up-and-go” test—which involves standing, walking around a cone, and sitting back down—showed a 59% lower mortality risk compared to those with the lowest scores.
Additionally, a simple one-leg balance test proved highly predictive; those who could stand on one leg with eyes open for up to 30 seconds had approximately half the mortality risk of those who performed poorly during the seven-year follow-up period.
