Physical media and offline devices see resurgence among younger users
Younger generations are increasingly turning to offline data carriers and physical media to escape the constant stream of notifications and overwhelming content found on streaming platforms. According to statistics from the Hungarian marketplace Vatera, collectors and fans are seeking out rare items, special edition box sets, cassette tapes, and cult classic records to ensure their favorite media cannot be removed from a digital catalog.
There is a notable resurgence in interest for portable music players such as iPods, Walkmans, and Discmen. While Apple ceased iPod production in 2022, Gen Z users are searching second-hand markets for older models that facilitate simple, offline listening without app distractions. Developer Tony Fadell noted in an interview with The New York Times that the ability to listen to music without intrusive notifications remains a significant advantage for dedicated music players.
