Physical music formats see resurgence as CD sales rise

Physical music formats, particularly compact discs (CDs), are experiencing a significant commercial resurgence in 2026, challenging the dominance of digital streaming. In the United States, RIAA data indicates that CD revenue increased by 58.6% during the first half of the year, with Luminate reporting a 16% jump in retail purchases. This growth is notably outpacing vinyl in certain metrics; for instance, US CD sales grew by 16% compared to a 2.4% increase for vinyl.

This revival is largely driven by younger demographics, including Gen Z and millennials, who are seeking tangible ownership, collectible editions, and offline listening experiences to combat algorithmic fatigue. Analysts note that CDs offer a more affordable physical alternative to increasingly expensive vinyl records, while providing uncompressed, lossless audio quality that many streaming services lack.

Regional trends mirror this global shift. In Spain, PROMUSICAE reported a 4.3% increase in CD sales during the first half of 2026. In Germany, while streaming still accounts for over 84% of industry revenue, the physical market grew by 5.3%, with vinyl seeing a 9.8% increase in sales.
