Physical music formats see resurgence through vinyl and cassette sales

Physical music formats are experiencing a resurgence despite the dominance of digital streaming. In Italy, the physical music segment saw significant growth in 2025, generating approximately 75 million euros in revenue. This growth was driven primarily by vinyl, which accounted for 65% of physical revenue, followed by CDs at 33%. Notably, 71% of physical units sold were albums released between 2020 and 2025, indicating strong interest from younger generations.

In the first half of 2026, the Italian recorded music market grew by 7.3%, reaching a total turnover of about 225 million euros. While streaming remains the market leader, representing 80% of the industry, the physical sector grew by 12%, bolstered by an 18.5% increase in vinyl sales.

Complementing this trend, Maxell and Disk Unione have announced a collaboration to relaunch the iconic UD series audio cassettes. The new UD-60U Type I cassettes, featuring iron oxide magnetic tape, are being released for a nostalgic audience and new enthusiasts. The cassettes will be sold individually for approximately 6.25 dollars or in packs of three for roughly 18.28 dollars.
