Physical strength and mindset are key to healthy aging
Maintaining physical strength and challenging age-related stereotypes are key components of healthy aging. Experts suggest that while biological changes are inevitable, many limitations are self-imposed due to cultural perceptions that equate youth with relevance and capability.
From a physiological standpoint, glute strength serves as a critical indicator of aging well. According to Antonia Chen, M.D., of UT Southwestern Medical Center, the glutes act as primary stabilizers for the entire body. Weakness in this muscle group can lead to joint overload, lower back pain, and increased difficulty with mobility.
Orthopedic physical therapist Scott McAfee notes that leg strength is essential for independence. A simple diagnostic tool, the 30-second chair stand test, can help assess risk; for instance, a 62-year-old woman performing significantly fewer repetitions may face a higher risk of falls, which is a serious concern for seniors.
