Physical therapy promotes healthy aging and autonomy
To mark World Physical Therapy Day on September 8, specialists are highlighting the role of physical therapy in promoting healthy aging and maintaining autonomy. The practice helps preserve motor functions, prevent injuries, and reduce limitations caused by aging.
Igor Bonelli, coordinator of the physical therapy course at Faculdade Anhanguera, notes that the field focuses not only on recovering from illness or injury but also on preventing falls, improving balance, strengthening muscles, and maintaining mobility.
Data from the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (INTO), part of the Ministry of Health, indicates that one in three people over the age of 65 suffers at least one fall per year. Preventive physical therapy can significantly reduce this risk, improve functional capacity, and reduce chronic pain, thereby promoting greater independence in daily activities.
