Physician burnout addressed through AI technology and new research

Efforts to combat physician burnout and improve workforce stability in the United States are advancing through new technological applications and research initiatives.

An empirical study involving six U.S. health systems demonstrated that ambient AI scribing technology can reduce physician burnout from 51.9% to 38.8%. The technology works by silently capturing patient-provider conversations and using natural language processing to extract clinical information, addressing the heavy documentation burden often exacerbated by telemedicine.

Simultaneously, the American Medical Association (AMA) and Atalan have launched the PROGRESS Study (Physician Retention, Optimization, and Growth: Real-world Evidence and Sentiment Synthesis). This multi-site research initiative aims to understand the factors influencing physician retention by combining physician-reported data with operational workforce data. Atalan’s platform utilizes existing operational data, such as EHR usage and workload, to predict clinician burnout and turnover with 70% accuracy up to a year in advance.
