Physicians leave Bosnia and Herzegovina for employment abroad

Since the beginning of 2026, 27 doctors have left six cantons within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to seek employment abroad. According to data from the Medical Chamber of FBiH, the Tuzla Canton saw the highest departure with 10 doctors, followed by Sarajevo and Central Bosnia, each losing six.

All 27 physicians requested certificates specifically for the purpose of working in foreign countries. This trend contributes to a significant medical staff shortage in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which currently has between 162 and 243 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure is substantially lower than the European average of over 360 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants.

Physicians are primarily migrating to Slovenia, Austria, Germany, and Scandinavian countries, citing better salaries, improved working conditions, and opportunities for professional advancement and specialization as primary drivers. Rifat Rijad Zaid, President of the Medical Chamber of FBiH, noted that while it is difficult to stop the exodus, the Chamber is working through regulations to ensure better conditions for medical staff.
