Physicist Cosimo Bambi proposes black hole probe mission
Italian physicist Cosimo Bambi, affiliated with Fudan University, is proposing a mission to send a probe toward a black hole to test the limits of current physical theories. While Einstein’s general theory of relativity describes black holes, the theory fails to explain what occurs within the singularity—the infinitely small point where time and space as we understand them cease to exist.
Bambi suggests that the current scientific understanding of black holes may be incomplete and that exploring them could reveal new physics. However, the mission faces immense logistical hurdles, most notably the extreme distance; the nearest known black hole is approximately 1,560 light-years away. Despite these challenges, Bambi has developed concrete proposals to address the difficulties of such a journey.
