Physics analysis reveals complexity of Star Trek’s Picard maneuver

Physicist Níckolas De Aguiar Alves has analyzed the physics behind the famous ‘Picard maneuver’ from Star Trek: The Next Generation, suggesting the actual visual effect would be more complex than depicted in the series.

In the maneuver, Captain Jean-Luc Picard uses the Stargazer to perform a warp jump toward an enemy vessel, which in the show causes the enemy to perceive two ships simultaneously. However, Alves notes that due to the way light reaches an observer, the enemy would actually see three ships.

Because the ship accelerates to warp speeds, the light emitted from different points along its trajectory would reach the observer at different times. This would result in the appearance of a third ship located between the starting point and the destination, which would appear to be moving in retrograde motion.
