Physint moves to Xbox after Sony cancels development funding

Kojima Productions has secured a new publishing partnership with Xbox for its upcoming action-espionage title, Physint, following the abrupt cancellation of the project by Sony Interactive Entertainment in June 2026.

Reports indicate that Sony's decision to withdraw was driven by several factors, including the commercial performance of the Death Stranding series, budget overruns, and missed development milestones. Additionally, Sony was reportedly reluctant to fund a high-budget title that would not remain a permanent PlayStation exclusive.

The transition to Xbox may present technical challenges. Kojima Productions is expected to lose access to Sony’s proprietary Decima Engine, which was used in the early stages of Physint. This could necessitate a move to a new engine, potentially increasing development costs and timelines. However, the studio's other project, OD, remains unaffected as it is being developed on Unreal Engine 5.

Physint is described as an ambitious project intended to bridge the gap between film and video games, with previous plans for cinematic expansion involving Columbia Pictures. The game is now expected to target releases on Xbox and PC.
