Physiological effects of air travel on the human body

Flying at altitudes of approximately 9,000 meters subjects the human body to non-natural conditions, primarily due to changes in cabin pressure and low humidity. According to Adam Taylor, a professor of Clinical Anatomy at Lancaster University, these environmental shifts significantly impact air-containing systems, such as the digestive and respiratory tracts.

Key physiological effects include dehydration, altered taste and smell due to dry cabin air, bloating caused by gas expansion in the intestines, and swelling in the legs from prolonged immobility. Changes in oxygen levels and pressure can also lead to ear discomfort and fatigue.

Medical experts, including Dr. Roger Henderson, note that approximately one in three in-flight medical emergencies involves fainting. This can be triggered by a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up after long periods of sitting, especially if the passenger is dehydrated or stressed. To mitigate these effects, experts recommend maintaining hydration and limiting alcohol consumption during flights.
