Pi Network testnet shows smart contract activity via BNPi app

Smart contract functionalities have become visible within Pi Network testnet wallets, specifically through the activity of BNPi, an independent booking application. On-chain transactions have revealed functions such as ‘server_auto_release’ and ‘release_booking_escrow’, which allow funds to be held in escrow and released automatically based on predefined conditions.

This activity is part of the broader development of Protocol 27, an upgrade designed to enhance smart contract capabilities, including more flexible and secure on-chain transaction approvals. While BNPi is an independent application and not a service operated by the Pi Core Team, its testing of escrow and booking flows serves as a practical use case for the network’s evolving infrastructure.

Pi Network has previously targeted September 15, 2026, for the mainnet upgrade associated with these protocol preparations. The network has been incrementally rolling out features, including an RPC server in April and subscription support in mid-April, to facilitate testing of automated and recurring payment functions.
