Piacenza courier Pasquale Andriotta dies during delivery on last day of contract
Pasquale Andriotta, a 42-year-old courier working on contract for Afs Service (an appointee for Brt), died following a sudden medical emergency while making a delivery in Piacenza. The incident occurred on August 31, which was also the final day of his fixed-term contract. Andriotta, a father of three, collapsed in vicolo del Guazzo; despite emergency medical intervention, he passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The death has sparked significant controversy and labor protests. The Filt-Cgil union highlighted a “dramatic coincidence,” noting that Andriotta died on the same day his colleagues were striking to protest against increasing workloads, staff shortages, and unsustainable shifts. The union raised concerns that the precarious nature of his contract may have prevented him from participating in the strike or refusing heavy workloads, especially given the high temperatures.
Brt has expressed condolences and stated they are cooperating fully with authorities to investigate the circumstances. Unions, including Usb, have called for transparency regarding the organization of work during the strike, questioning whether the absence of striking workers increased the burden on those remaining on duty. Further strikes and demonstrations have been announced by workers in the Piacenza-Caorso area.
