Piacenza health authorities launch investigation after meningococcal meningitis case

Health authorities in the province of Piacenza, Italy, have launched an epidemiological investigation following a confirmed case of meningococcal meningitis in a local adolescent. The patient is currently hospitalized in non-serious condition.

To prevent further spread of the infection, the public hygiene service of the Ausl di Piacenza has identified close contacts, including family members, friends, school staff, and classmates. These individuals have been contacted and invited to undergo prophylactic antibiotic treatment at the Casa della Comunità di Piazzale Milano.

Meningococcal meningitis is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, which can reside in the nose and throat of up to 30% of the population without causing symptoms. The disease occurs when the bacteria reach the meninges, the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets, with an incubation period of 2 to 10 days.
