Piacenza school menu changes spark political debate over pork removal

A controversy has emerged in Piacenza, Italy, following changes to school canteen menus that exclude pork products such as coppa, loin, and cooked ham. Local politicians from the Fratelli d'Italia and Lega parties have criticized the decision, suggesting it may be an attempt to accommodate the religious requirements of Muslim students, which they argue undermines local culinary traditions.

City officials and the local health authority (Ausl) have denied these claims, stating the changes were made for technical and safety reasons. Education Commissioner Mario Dadati dismissed the allegations of ‘Islamization,’ asserting that special menus for Muslim children already exist and that religious considerations did not influence the general menu.

The debate has also sparked discussions regarding food education in schools, with observers questioning whether the focus should shift from specific ingredients to teaching children broader nutritional literacy and how to recognize processed versus fresh foods.
