Piaggio secures EU-wide trademark for Vespa Primavera shape
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has granted Piaggio Group a three-dimensional trademark registration for the shape of the Vespa Primavera scooter. This decision extends protection across all 27 EU member states, building upon previous registrations obtained in Italy in February 2024 and the United Kingdom in November 2025.
The registration covers both two-wheeled vehicles and scale models. The EUIPO recognized that the silhouette of the Vespa Primavera has acquired a distinctive character through use, meaning consumers associate the specific shape directly with its commercial origin rather than just viewing it as a general design.
Crucially, the protection is not limited to a single, unchanging form; stylistic evolutions can remain protected as long as they retain the distinctive elements that make a Vespa immediately recognizable. This legal milestone follows previous efforts by Piaggio to defend its design against competitors, such as a 2019 case involving the Chinese-made Znen Ves, where the European Union Court ruled that the models produced different general impressions.
