Artificial Intelligence: Rapid adoption brings risks to minors and recruitment bias

Artificial intelligence is rapidly integrating into daily life, bringing both utility and significant societal challenges. In Italy, a report from the National Observatory for Minors and AI (ONAMIA) reveals that 89% of children aged 9 to 16 have used generative AI in the past month. Concerns have been raised regarding critical thinking, as 76% of these children trust AI responses, while only 62% verify information through other sources. Additionally, Save the Children noted that 41.8% of 15-19 year olds use chatbots to cope with loneliness or anxiety. To address risks, Italian Law 132/2025 requires parental consent for AI access for children under 14.

In the professional sphere, research indicates that AI can introduce bias in recruitment. Candidates using the same AI model as the evaluator had a 23% to 60% higher chance of being shortlisted compared to those with human-written resumes. Meanwhile, the European Union has implemented the AI Act, a risk-based regulatory framework that entered into force in August 2024 to govern the ethical use of the technology.

Consumer trends show high adoption rates; in Italy, 46% of adults use AI tools weekly, often for translation, learning, or information management. In the creative and technical sectors, the impact varies from Ben Affleck's ethical use of AI in film to the development of AI-generated micro-series for political propaganda in China and the use of AI in construction engineering.
