Pianopoli landfill fire prompts environmental concerns in Calabria

A fire at the Carratello landfill in Pianopoli has been extinguished after several hours. The blaze caused odors that were detectable across various areas of the Catanzare province.

Legambiente has called for thorough investigations to determine the cause of the fire and establish responsibility. The association is also demanding monitoring of air and soil to check for potential contamination. Legambiente noted that this incident follows a previous fire at a tire collection facility in Lamezia Terme last June, highlighting systemic issues within Calabria’s waste management cycle.

The organization emphasized that the region is lagging behind European Union environmental targets. EU directives mandate that urban waste sent to landfills should not exceed 10% by 2035, and domestic recycling targets include 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035.
