Pianura ecological island fire triggers emergency measures in Naples

A large fire broke out on Sunday, October 4, at an ecological island located on via Montagna Spaccata in the Pianura district of Naples. The blaze, which affected an area containing bulky and potentially hazardous waste, caused significant concern due to its proximity to a fuel distribution station and the potential release of toxic substances.

In response to the incident, Mayor Gaetano Manfredi issued an ordinance closing schools in Pianura and suspending outdoor sporting activities. Local health authorities, Asl Napoli 1 Centro, advised residents to keep windows and doors closed, avoid spending time outdoors, and turn off air conditioning units to mitigate exposure to pollutants.

Emergency services, including three fire brigade teams, the municipal civil protection, and local police, worked to secure the area. Arpac is scheduled to install samplers to monitor air quality and measure pollutants. While no injuries were reported, the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, convened the Emergency Coordination Center to manage the situation.
