PIAP Space develops Raven spacecraft to combat rising orbital debris

The European Space Agency (ESA) estimates that approximately 1.5 million space debris objects between 1 cm and 10 cm in size, and 230 million objects between 1 mm and 1 cm, are currently orbiting Earth. Experts warn that the growing volume of orbital debris increases the risk of satellite collisions and destruction.

To address this, industry focus is shifting toward both orbital cleaning and satellite servicing technologies. The Raven project, led by the Polish company PIAP Space, is developing a multi-purpose spacecraft designed for both civilian and defense applications. This vessel aims to provide satellite servicing, enabling maneuvers and extending the operational lifespan of expensive orbital assets.

In response to these growing concerns, the European Commission proposed the EU Space Act in June 2025. The proposed legislation seeks to improve space object tracking and limit the creation of new debris by implementing requirements for collision avoidance and the safe disposal of satellites following their missions.
