Piauí commemorates historical independence movement
The state of Piauí commemorates October 19 as its official holiday, marking a pivotal moment in the region's movement toward independence from the Portuguese Crown. In 1822, the city of Parnaíba proclaimed its adherence to the independence of Brazil, led by figures such as Simplício Dias da Silva and João Cândido de Deus e Silva.
Historian Fonseca Neto, president of the Academia Piauiense de Letras, notes that while October 19 is a central date, the emancipation was a gradual process involving power struggles and military confrontations. He describes the date as a catalyst that shifted the balance of power in the former capital, Oeiras, by drawing military forces away and creating a vacuum for new political actors to emerge.
The struggle for independence included significant military resistance, such as the advance of Portuguese Major João José da Cunha Fidié against Parnaíba. The process eventually culminated in the Battle of Jenipapo on March 13, 1823, one of the bloodiest conflicts during the Brazilian War of Independence, where local forces united to confront Portuguese troops.
