Piauí Governor proposes passenger rail reactivation on Transnordestina line

Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles is advocating for the reactivation of passenger rail services on a section of the Transnordestina railway. The proposal aims to restore service on the stretch connecting Caxias (MA) to Altos (PI), passing through Teresina.

Fonteles is requesting that the Federal Government include passenger transport in the upcoming contract renewal for Transnordestina Logística, scheduled for 2026. The specific rail segment has been inactive for passenger use since 1988. The governor noted that the operating company has already expressed interest in the investment.

Separately, construction continues on another section of the Transnordestina railway intended to link southern Piauí to the Port of Pecém in Ceará, with cargo transport tests expected to begin in October and a completion target of 2028.
